pictures from pixmix

Pixmixsimpleviewerif you missed the pixmix tonight, then you can see all the images i showed in the /pics section, in the folder pixmix13.

this time i used a new gallery-export-program which is built around simpleviewer/postcardviewer [1].

simple- and postcardviewer are a free flash image viewing application with a visually pleasing result. the thing that makes it supereasy to export galleries or folders is iphoto export from hagus.net.

choose a folder or gallery in iphoto, choose the viewer and press export. voila. and all freeware, free as in eggerbier [2].

wait ’till all the images are loaded and it looks like in the screenshot above, then click on any of the images. the stack of images is randomly ordered, but i kinda like that :-)

let me know if you like that kind of gallery more than the old…

[2] you might only get that if you’ve been at the pixmix tonight…

panoramas from the gurten

as mentioned before, i also shot two panoramas from the watch-tower yesterday. because i’m on holiday preparation, i found some time to stitch them with the excellent hugin [1].

both panoramas below were shot hand-held, without a tripod and without aperture-control (i need that with my next camera…). the original images were resized to 1024*768 pixels to prevent harddisk-bloat, and then stitched.

with the free program make cubic they were assembled into a QTVR. click on the thumbnails below, wait until the movies are loaded (beware: they’re both quite big!) and then click/drag around with your mouse.

here’s the one i shot from the center of the tower:

Gurten Turm Zentrum (1.7mb .mov)

this image was quite tricky to assemble, mostly because of the distortion of the wooden beams in contrast to the not distorted heaven. maybe i should start carrying a tripod around…

and here’s the one i shot from the handrail:

Gurten Aussen-1(1.8mb .mov)

this image was assembled fully automatic using autopano-sift, hugin and makecubic. no intervention from me except clicking some buttons and dragging a file to the dock. nifty, innit?

if you’d like to see the pictures as jpg, then you can see them on flickr. both images are available in full glory, be it either 7153 x 681 (from the center) or 7040 x 694 (from the handrail) pixels big.

[1] if you load the page, you might see some panoramas from me as the head banner….

picture of the week 17

this weekend the 21st berner renntage have been carried out at the klösterlistutz.

because i saved two days from my civil service at the adventure playground i was part of the staff this weekend. after hauling around 300 bales of straw around 60 soap box cars raced down the rather steep hill. the car below was one of the nicest, even though it doesn’t really fit into the selfmade category. the kids got it from an old rollercoaster and rebuilt it as a race-car.

if you’d like to see some of the other participants of the race, you can do that in my set over at flickr. (or separated into the pictures from saturday and sunday).

nowpublic.com uses my photos (with my permission)

Nowpublicmy pictures from saturday evening are now part of a story at nowpublic.com.

how does that happen you ask?

this afternoon i got an email from clorenz41 [1] through flickr. he asked if he could use my photos “for a few stories that have been sent in”. the mail included some fancy link which made the whole process work automagically.

so after some clicks my pictures are now part of a story from conneticutkati [2], where she quotes another article on indymedia.ch.

if you want to read the post at nowpublic, then click here or take a look at the screenshot on the left.

if this is happening more often, maybe i should start to take money for my images?

[1] he is: “Director, Contributor Relations, NowPublic.”

[2] i wonder why she writes about the antifa abendspaziergang, although she’s from vancouver…

the most important 6 seconds in music history

Amen Breaksince i seem to be in a musical mood, here’s another post for sound lovers:

if you’ve listened to any song that uses samples, be it hip hop, drum n bass, dub or a lot of other flavors, you’ve heard the “amen break”. it’s a sample from the b-side of a single of the winstons from 1969, that only lasts 6 seconds.

it’s absolutely amazing how far those snare beats came, it became the base of nearly every drum n bass and jungle song.

nate harrison made an eerie fascinating installation/art project where he narrrates the story of this ubiquitous peace of musical history.

i’ve been hooked to the 20min-movie after the first time he plays the original sample. nate manages to run down the complete story of that key aural ingredient in contemporary cultural expression during the progress of the movie. he shows a lot of examples, compares them to the original recording and even covers the implications of sampling material on copyright law.

you can only listen to the movie, nothing really happens, except some cuts between a turntable and speakers, but i found it worth watching the progress of the needle on the wax, giving a meditative touch to the story.

you can watch the movie here or download a copy on the archive.org.

if you only have a slight interest in musical history you must watch it!

what we do at noon

yesterday – the last workday in 2005 – küde [1] made lunch for us. the perfect messenger-lunch with lots of carbohydrates (bread) and fat (cheeeeeese). fondue [2].

here are some impressions:

Fondue0 Fondue1

the table getting ready – simu cooking

Fondue2 Fondue4

andi readying the fondue, dewi having some wine – reto and simu digesting

Fondue5 Fondue3

hämme, nicola, andi – nicola finishing off, andi and hämme watching.

[1] actually his name is simu: see him in action here and hear his messenger-song here (4mb swiss german gölä-tribute .mp3). the song was the gift we/he made to our customers last year.

[2] the whole afternoon was rather unpleasant to ride, ’cause i had big cheeseblob in my belly…

pictures of the week 47

as in the last two years nina and me went to the polyball in zürich. it was a blast, although we couldn’t dance that much this year ’cause ninas back ached a bit after an hour of salsa :-)

the image below is one of my polyball-set on flickr. if you’d like to see some more images of us, then you should proceed over to the site of the fotostudio unartig. they made professional shots of all the attendants of the ball and supplied a photo-studio where you could make some selfportraits. the set of our self-portraits starts here and the professional shots start here.

don’t we look spiffy?

english: i’m in the newspaper: this born writes a bi-weekly column in the local newspaper. he mentioned me, i’m flattered…

i’m on uncluttering mission

i’ve officially killed my two moblogs [1]. from now on, all my (seldom) moblogging is going to happen here: http://flickr.com/photos/habi/tags/moblog/. regarding that, i’ve also uncluttered my sidebar a bit. the latest images-section now shows the five latest images i posted to flickr. on top there’s the latest moblog, then the four latest “normal” images.

i achieved this with a mashup of the code of two flickr-badges. the first one is pulling just the “moblog” tag, the second one is pulling the last 4 images.

the full code looks like this, nothing too fancy really:

the code is really straight-forward.

i just cleaned out the css and merged the two javascript parts. if you want to adopt it for your page, you just have to change the user-number and/or tag [2].

[1]: they’ve been clinically dead anyway…

[2]: a simple google search yielded this: “To get your NSID from Flickr, go to your photos page, view source, find global_nsid, and note the value. That’s it.”

underwater panorama

Almajaneuntil some hours ago i believed that maybe i made the first ever underwater panorama photograph, while on the philippines. a simple google search proved me wrong, there is already much more impressive work available online (see here, for the first ever published underwater panorama [1]). nonetheless i’m gonna tell you the story of the panorama of my alma jane shot in this post.

while we resurfaced from the alma jane i shot 7 images of the wreck and then tried to reconnect them later on with the excellent hugin for osx. as i mentioned before i started to use makecubic from apple to convert the .tiff-files from hugin to quicktime vr .mov files which are sometimes more pleasant to view.

this particular panorama was the first for me to notice something special:

Almajane1when i generated the panorama the resulting image was much more pleasing when i added a horizontal guideline along the railing of the ship. this resulted in the image seen on the top left. when i didn’t add that guideline the resulting image was not so pleasing to the eye, mostly because the ship looks really crooked, as seen on the bottom right.

so i uploaded the uncrooked version to flickr, for all of you to see. then i converted the images with makecubic, ’cause i wanted to see how the panoramas look when converted to a quicktime vr. that’s when the difference comes in. the first, uncrooked version looks a bit weird when viewing as a qtvr as you can see in the movie on the left below (760 kb .mov-file).

Mov Almajane-1Mov Almajane1

the second image looks much more like it was in the water, where the movement was a swaying from left to down to right. see for yourself in the movie on the left (769 kb .mov-file).

just so you can see what bonds me to my computer on those long, lazy and rainy sunday afternoons.

have a good week!

[1]: i still might be second :-)

picture of the week 39

i didn’t shoot any pictures this week, so i’m picking another one from our holidays on the philippines. although the nudibranch is not in focus i quite like the image below, mostly because of its vibrant colors. you can see some more images from our holidays in the pictures section or on flickr (which is better for the panoramas, ’cause you can see them in a bigger size…).

abstimmen! [update]

[2]: nummer 17 in patriks liste (übrigens: 0111000001100110 = pf)

[update]: ich löli hab doch tatsächlich vergessen den link zu linken, wo mensch abstimmen kann: hier

new pictures are online

i finally found a free minute to sift through my pile of images, and was able to upload a first batch of images from the ecmc in basel.

you can see them here.

if you’d like to see more messengers messing around, then you can see mathieus images (from lausanne) or some more in the images-section of fahrradkurier.ch.

i’m still struggling with a panorama around the sharp turn of the uphill-sprint (the one here). maybe my g4 has not enough ram to handle a panorama consisting of 15 5 mpixel images. i’m trying it soon with resized images and keep you updated.
