wordpress plugins are great!

wordpress-plugins are really neat!

i probably stumbled over lightboxJS a hundred times before. today i thought it would be really nice to have that for this site here. thanks to wordpress-plugins, implementing it here only took 4 steps:

– google wordpress plugin lightboxJS
– download the plugin from here
– drop it into /wp-content/plugins
– activate the plugin in the control panel
and now, if you click on an image, you get the nice lightboxJS-effect. try it for yourself, maybe in the post below!
and if you read me only through my feed, this might be worth checking out the site…

updating here and there

i’m updating the site on different ends, correcting importing errors, and assigning categories to post that haven’t been categorized. so bear with me (and ignore the possible quirks in the feed for some days), everything will resume to normal state soon.

for rouge, the site now has a favicon, thankts to the favicon manager for wordpress, and cocomments is now integrated thanks to the really cool plugin from david.

this blog is now without /blog

in the last few weeks movable type stressed the server more and more. after reading a bit into it, i found out, that wordpress is much fancier and much less resource-hungry as a blog platform.
and after trying out an install wordpress on habi.gna.ch, which really took less than five minutes, i was sold. now wordpress is powering habi.gna.ch and the blog is going to migrate to the root directory. everything else (pics, cv, my calendars and such) is still gonna stay where it is, and maybe be integrated into wordpress (which works quite well as a CMS) sometimes.
i’m still tinkering with the way of redirectong the old movable type archives to the imported posts, but this still has time.
if you’d like, you can change your feed addresses, but i will install a redirect-rule and leave everyting where it is.
after some time, when google and co. picked up everything, i’m gonna delete or inactivate /blog…

for your convenience [1] here are the new feed addresses:
for the posts: https://habi.gna.ch/feed/ and for the comments: https://habi.gna.ch/comments/feed/

[1] i also really like the URIs which are generated by wordpress. nice and clean (see the archives, for example…)

the future of interfaces

jeff han [1] is a researcher at the new york university. he gave a talk at the ted-conference. if you’re a bit interested in the – possible – future of interface design, you have to watch the ~9 minute-long video below. it nearly blew my socks of, when i imagined how i could swipe through my 7000+ images on my hd like that. handling of big chunks of date seems to be really fun with that kind of interface.

and i also found mr. han quite entertaining. he has to talk really fast to get all the ideas and thoughts out quick enough, or his brain is gonna explode (pun intended…)

[1] bummer: while searching for his homepage, i found out, that i’ve already blogged him with with the same project… yeah well, talk about short attention span. but if you want, you can watch some other talks here.

transform your face!

Habi.Normldid you ever wonder how you’re gonna look in some years? or how you would look if born in another part of your world? or look when painted?

then you have to go and check out the free face transformer from the perception laboratory of the university of st. andrews! it’s really quite funny and made me laugh!

you just feed it an image of yourself, something like the image on the top left, and you get the results below (clicketyclick for bigger):

Habi.Baby
habi as a baby
Habi.Child
as a child
Habi.Teenage
as a teenager
Habi.Old
as an old man
Habi.Black
as a black man
Habi.Eastasian
as an asian man
Habi.Apeman
as an apeman
Habi.Female
as a woman
Habi.Manga
manga character
Habi.Boticelli
painted by
boticelli
Habi.Modigliani

the quintessence: i need to cut my hair in general, i look quite creepy as a baby, quite valid as an asian man, extremely funny as an apeman and i need to shave if i want to impersonate a woman.

they’re made out of meat! [update]

they’re made out of meat is a short-film adaptation of nebula award winner terry bissons story about two extraterrestrials having a funny and also a bit gross talk in restaurant at the end of the universe (or was that another story).

the dialogue is quite funny:

“They’re made out of meat.” “Meat?” “Meat. They’re made out of meat.”

“Meat?”

“There’s no doubt about it. We picked up several from different parts of the planet, took them aboard our recon vessels, and probed them all the way through. They’re completely meat.”

“That’s impossible. What about the radio signals? The messages to the stars?”

“They use the radio waves to talk, but the signals don’t come from them. The signals come from machines.”

“So who made the machines? That’s who we want to contact.”

“They made the machines. That’s what I’m trying to tell you. Meat made the machines.”

“That’s ridiculous. How can meat make a machine? You’re asking me to believe in sentient meat.”

go and watch it on youtube. after you watched that movie, you can still watch the bekennervideo of the pendlerblog, which was showed at the swissblogawards this friday.

and if you’ve watched that movie, you might also want to see another funny one, the bekennervideo of the pendlerblog which was shown last friday at the swiss blog awards.

creative commons in full effect

through my ego-surfing-feed [1] i found this story in the austinist, a website from austin (i presume :-).

to illustrate the breaking news of a downtown fire, the used a picture of the fire at wolfs birthday party. my pictures at flickr are released under an attribution license, so anybody is free to use them as you please, as long as there is proper attribution added.

not too bad, maybe i should consider starting a career as photographer :-)

[1] might not work for you, since it’s a newsgator online edition feed, technically it’s a keyword search after “habi”.

the sound of traffic [update]

Soundoftrafficit’s been quite a long time since i’ve posted something about new software additions to my mac. this app here is actually completely useless, but nonetheless it’s been running since half an hour.

sound of traffic is a tiny java application (112 kb) that converts your network traffic into midi notes. my traffic sounds like a laid back chill-out track (i’m downloading/seeding the latest episode of the it crowd over bittorrent and updating some feeds from time to time). the app needs your admin password to access some devices and only works on OS X and Unix [1].

ändu, couldn’t you use this for your next song?

a funny little time-waster!

[via osxhints]

[1] leo ported it to windows, so nobody has to stay out…

update: jan used sound of traffic in one of his cool pieceocasts

this blog is now cocomment enabled!

after reading a lot of buzz about cocomment (explained a wee bit here :-) i thought it’s about time to jump the bandwagon.

and now, after adding a little bit of code to the individual entry archive this blog is now officially pimped -ehrm- cocomment enabled.

have no idea what i’m talking about? i only start to get the implication of cocomment, but let me explain it here, as far as i get it: up to now, whenever i commented on a blog/site somewhere, i had to remember to visit the site later on or add the comment feed to my feedreader to not loose that particular conversation string. cocomment should be able to overcome that, because it enables a lot of sites (even flickr!) to “send” the comments back to one central location. i’m now able to track those comments in a central location and follow conversations more, thus participating more (talk about positive feedback loop).

so, if you want to see in which conversations i take part or want to stalk me you should look here or add this feed to your preferred feed-reader.

but now it’s officially too late, so i wish you all a good night!

*.blogug.ch is working

after some heated debates about opml-files and licensing problems (which i’ve not taken part in) there’s a new open swiss weblog directory, where every blogging person should add their feed. as far as i understand it, it’s supposed to become a complete repository of all swiss feeds, where people then can build services with it (aggregators and other tools).

jan has a short rundown, chregu has a more thorough post, also explaining the ping-service. i’ve added a blogug.ch-button to my sidebar (it used to be sub.scribe.to for some days…) and time will tell if it’s gonna kick in…

as far as i found out, MT-users can ping by going to their /mt.cgi, to general settings of the weblog in question (in the sidebar under settings) and then to “new entry defaults”. there you have to add “http://ping.blogug.ch” to “Publicity/Remote Interfaces”.

in ecto [1] just go to “weblog” > “edit settings” (ctrl+apple+s) and add “http://ping.blogug.ch” to Pings.

[1]: ecto is 20% cheaper around christmas, and IMHO an indispensable helper!

english: i’m in the newspaper: this born writes a bi-weekly column in the local newspaper. he mentioned me, i’m flattered…
